Don't know the exact length?

Stop guessing. Trace roof edges and gutters perfectly via high-res satellite.

The Christmas light installation season is incredibly short. You have roughly 45 days from early November to mid-December to make your entire winter revenue. If you are wasting hours driving to residential properties and climbing ladders just to give a quote, you are losing money.

Unlike sealcoating or pressure washing which relies on square footage (area), holiday lighting relies entirely on linear feet (distance). You are pricing by the foot of C9 bulb wire you install along the fascias, gutters, and ridges. This guide will show you exactly how to use high-resolution satellite imagery to measure linear footage safely from your laptop.

Step 1: Identifying the Fascia and Gables

When you type a customer's address into your satellite measuring software (like RemoteQuoter), you must switch your mindset from "Area" to "Path." You are not tracing a closed shape; you are tracing the edge of the roofline.

The most common Christmas light installation is a "Fascia Only" or "Gutter Line" install. These are the horizontal edges of the roof that face the street. Using the Path or Distance tool, you click on the left edge of the front gutter and drag a straight line to the right edge. The software will immediately tell you the exact length—for example, 45 linear feet.

However, gables (the triangular peaks of the roof) require a pitch conversion. If you look at a roof peak straight down from a satellite, the 2D image flattens the peak. A gable that looks like it is 20 feet long on the satellite might actually be 24 feet long when you factor in the 8/12 vertical pitch. Modern quoting tools will automatically calculate this geometry for you, ensuring you do not run short on wire.

Step 2: Ridge Lines and High Stakes Measurement

Premium holiday lighting packages often include the ridge lines (the very top peaks of the roof). This creates a stunning gingerbread house outline.

Measuring ridges from a satellite is actually easier than measuring fascias because ridge lines are perfectly horizontal and do not suffer from severe pitch distortion when viewed top-down. You simply trace the top spine of the roof. If the ridge is 60 feet long, you need 60 feet of C9 socket wire.

Step 3: Calculating Window Outlines

Many customers want their front-facing windows wrapped in mini-lights or C9s. From a straight top-down satellite view, windows are completely invisible because they are hidden under the roof's soffit overhang.

To solve this, you use Google Street View integration. From the street-level photo, you can count the number of window panes. A standard residential double-hung window is roughly 3 feet wide and 5 feet tall.(3 + 5 + 3 + 5) = 16 linear feet per window. If the customer has 4 front-facing windows, you instantly know to add 64 linear feet to your quote without ever setting foot on the property.

Step 4: The Pricing Matrix (The $6 to $10 Rule)

Once your software has traced all the fascias, gables, and ridges, you will have your total linear footage. Let's say the total measurement is 150 linear feet.

Professional Christmas light installation is usually priced between $6.00 and $10.00 per linear foot. This premium price includes leasing the commercial-grade lights to the customer, installation, maintenance calls, and removal in January.

150 LF × $6.00 = $900.00 Quote.

Because you measured the property remotely in 60 seconds, you can send this $900 quote to the customer via email instantly. While your competitors are stuck in traffic driving to the house to climb a ladder with a tape measure, you have already closed the deal and collected the deposit.
