Stop guessing. Drop a pin on any property and measure it perfectly via high-res satellite.
Plowing a massive driveway with an F-250 takes 5 minutes. Shoveling a tiny front walkway by hand takes 20 minutes. In the winter service industry, manual labor is your highest expense and your biggest liability.
When a homeowner asks you to "just shovel the walkway while you're here," you cannot give it away for free. You must treat manual shoveling as a premium, high-cost service. To quote it accurately over the phone, you must know how to identify tight pathways, porches, and stairs using satellite imagery.
Step 1: Tracing the Walkways and Patios
A plow truck cannot fit on a 3-foot wide front walkway. This is 100% manual labor.
Using your quoting software's Polygon Tool, you zoom in tightly on the high-resolution satellite map. You trace the front walkway from the driveway to the front porch. Let's assume the software calculates this as 150 square feet.
Because manual labor is slow, you cannot charge your standard truck plowing rate (e.g., $0.08/sqft). Manual shoveling is often billed between $0.40 and $0.75 per square foot depending on the region. At $0.50 per square foot, you add an instant $75.00 surcharge to the quote just for that small walkway.
Step 2: Counting Stairs via Street View
Top-down satellite imagery is excellent for calculating 2D area, but it completely flattens stairs. Shoveling snow off a flat walkway is easy. Shoveling ice off a flight of 10 stairs is dangerous and slow.
When quoting a shoveling job, you must open the Google Street View integration. You "walk" down the street and look at the front of the house. You count the stairs leading up to the porch.
Many companies add a flat $5.00 per stair surcharge. If the house has 6 stairs leading to the porch, you add a $30.00 "Stair Surcharge" to the quote. If you don't check Street View, you will arrive at the property and have to eat that labor cost for free.
Step 3: Factoring De-Icing Material Costs
Walkways and porches require premium de-icing materials. You cannot throw cheap bulk rock salt on a stamped concrete patio or a wooden porch; it will destroy the surface. You must use Calcium Chloride or Magnesium Chloride, which is significantly more expensive.
Because you already traced the exact square footage of the walkways (150 sq ft), you know exactly how much premium ice melt to allocate. A standard 50lb bag of Calcium Chloride covers roughly 1,000 square feet. You instantly know you only need to use 15% of a bag for this property, allowing you to track your exact material overhead down to the penny.
